Fashion Flowers For Autumn
The New Collection: Indian Summer - Autumn 1999
The last, stunning flare of colour
Those glorious, sunny days of early autumn - does
the term "Indian Summer" conjure up Delhi's pink sandstone
palaces warmed by the setting sun? Sultry evenings basking on the
veranda of a bungalow? (Two Indian words adopted by the colonists.)
You've captured the right feelings, but from the wrong side of the
world.
The 'Indians' of the Indian Summer are in fact
the 'Red' Indians of America. French-Canadians speak of "L'été
des Indiens" or "L'été des Sauvages".
So think instead of adobe pueblos in Arizona or New Mexico, of the
rich culture and craft skills of the Native Americans. The Navajo
are the largest group of Native Americans; they are skilled weavers,
silversmiths, and excellent potters.
