For a sassy plant which won't fade into the background, choose the Alocasia amazonica. It quietly stands out with its huge long leaves which start as a shiny pale green before turning a duller grey/green with raised pale green lines.

Although amazonica is its name, it has nothing to do with the Amazon. It is a native of South East Asia.
