Adiantum
Name
Pronounced ADD-ee-an-toom and commonly called maidenhair fern.
Description
The most delicate of ferns, with dainty, fan-like, pale green triangular leaves
on black wiry stalks.
Origin
Tropical and subtropical areas
of Australia, New Zealand and the Americas
Family
Polypodiaceae
Varieties
Most common ones available are raddianum, monocolor, fragrans, scuteum roseum.
Adiantum brilliantese (pictured here) has tiny leaves which start out gold, slowly
turning to pale green, but often retaining a golden edge.
Care Tips
Not difficult to grow but make sure it does not dry out. It needs a steady humid
atmosphere with no direct sunlight, and does well in bathrooms and the shaded
parts of a conservatory or greenhouse. Keep the roots moist, but not wet, and
spray often, daily if in a heated room. It prefers indirect light.
