Plant
Facts
Epipremnum pinnatum
Name - Pronounced eppy-PREM-num. Commonly called devil's ivy.
Description
- Epipremnum has glossy green leaves covered with yellow patches or spots. A versatile
plant that climbs or trails depending on whether or not you give it support. Its
stems can reach 2 m or more, but you can wind them round on themselves to keep
the plant compact. A moss pole offers good support if you want it to climb.
Origin
- It comes from the humid tropical Solomon and South East Asian islands, where
it attaches itself to the bark of tree trunks.
Family - Araceae
Varieties
- Its heart-shaped leaves vary in size and variegation. The white variegation
'Marble Queen' is best in good light. 'Neon' has bright yellowish green leaves.
Variegated forms need plenty of light for the markings to be at their best.
Care
Tips - Tolerates quite a shady position but responds to good light conditions
with more vigorous growth. Poor light also causes leaves to be small. Water regularly
during spring and summer, but let the plant dry out slightly between watering.
Reduce watering in winter when the plant is less active. Feed monthly between
spring and summer. Dust or sponge leaves occasionally. If plant gets too big or
leggy, cut back to initiate new growth from lower down the stem. Root nodules
form along the stem, making propagation very easy - just lay the stems onto he
soil surface. Repot every year or every two years.
