  • Name - Nolina, pronounced NO-lee-na or Beaucarnea recurvata, pronounced bow-CAR-nee-a. Its common names are ponytail plant or elephants foot.
  • Description - Nolina has thin arching leaves sprouting from the top of a fat or long woody stem and a bulbous base that looks scaly like an elephant's foot.
  • Origin - Mexico
  • Family - Agavaceae, (agave)
  • Care Tips - Likes a bright, sunny position with fresh air. Can be grown on a balcony or patio, or in a well lit position indoors near a window. It will benefit from a spell outdoors in summer in a protected spot. It also prefers high temperatures during the active growth period and it must have a minimum of 10°C (50°F) during winter. Water plentifully in spring through to mid-autumn and sparingly in winter. Avoid standing in water at all costs. It can thrive in any centrally heated room as low humidity is required and does not require a lot of attention.
  • Trivia - Slow-growing and a relative of the yucca, its swollen bulb-like base stores water so occasional dryness at the roots will do no harm. It is more popular in the US than in the UK.
