Oxalis
Name - Oxalis is from the Greek Oxis meaning acid, which refers to
the acidity of the leaves. Commonly known as wood sorrel or shamrock.
Description
- Oxalis are characterised by their clover-like leaves which close up at night
and open during the day. The flowers are usually funnel-shaped.
Origin
- S. Africa and S. America
Family - Oxalidaceae, oxalis family
Varieties - Both Oxalis deppei (four leaf clover) with red flowers
and red cross marking on its leaves and Oxalis acetosella (wood sorrel) with white
flowers, are sold around St. Patrick's Day. Other varieties are Oxalis adenophylla
with green leaves and large pink/purple flowers and Oxalis triangularis (purple
shamrock) with pinkish white flowers and green or reddish-purple leaves.
Care Tips - Lots of light and cool all year round. Water and feed regularly
during its growing stage.
