Senecio
Name - Pronounced sen-ECK-ee-oh, from senex meaning an old
man, probably because the flowering types (same family as ragwort) produce fluffy
white seedheads, resembling a beard. Description - Senecios are
one of the largest genera of plants. They come in various different forms, including
foliage plants, such as string of beads and various trailing forms, waxy vines
and but also the flowering type, cineraria, related to groundsel and ragwort.
There are between 2000 and 3000 hybrids of cineraria alone (Senecio cruentus now
reclassified as Pericallis). Origin - South West Africa, Canary
Islands Colour - Cinerarias (Pericallis hybrids) come in a huge
number of colours and daisy shapes. Family - Compositae Care
Tips - The green succulent types (pictured here) prefer semi-shade and room
temperatures and tolerate dry air. Like most succulents, water them moderately
in summer, feeding half strength liquid food once every two months and water sparingly
in winter.
