< Carnation

What is an everyday flower like carnation doing in a fairytale fantasy? Being the star of the show, that's what! Carnations' intense colour and huge frilly flowers earn it pride of place in this trend. Curcuma >

This heavenly bloom, a native of Burma, was originally grown for its culinary uses rather than for its looks. A member of the ginger family, it was used in curry and as a substitute for saffron. Today the striking expressive shape of Curcuma is welcomed by creators of exclusive bouquets and arrangements. It's only been known in the UK since 1837, and even now very few of us are familiar with this sculptural flower, which lasts up to two weeks.

Gerbera

< Gerbera

The extensive gerbera family, first found growing in South Africa, now contains 1250 varieties. Breeders have taken the original material and from it, created an amazing array of colours and shapes - long skinny petals, fat oval ones, even crazy spiralling petals! If you keep the vases and water absolutely clean, you'll enjoy these flowers for up to ten days.

Gloriosa >

The delicate, twining, fairytale shapes of gloriosa combined with its strong red and yellow colours give this flower its showstopping looks. The name is derived from the Latin gloria, meaning honour or fame. It's the national flower of Zimbabwe, where it is known as flame lily. Like the strelitzia, no other flower looks quite like it - definitely a talking point for up to two weeks.

Strelitzia

< Strelitzia

The orange cockscomb hints at strelitzia's common name, the Bird of Paradise. With its expressive vibrant colours and unusual shape, it is no wonder that strelitzia is the standout flower of many a bouquet. You can enjoy them for up to three weeks; once the top plume has faded, pull it completely away from its beak pocket (including its juicy white root) and a new one will pop up.
