Flowers | Valentine's Day

COME ON BRITAIN - Wake up and smell the roses!

Flowers & Plants Association data reveals the UK's best selling flowers at Valentine's Day make us the most boring, unimaginative nation of all!

Best sellers for Valentines Day 2007:

1                 Rose
2                 Lily
3                 Chrysanthemums
4                 Daffodils/Narcissi
5                 Tulips
6                 Carnations
7                 Mixed bouquet

And it’s not just the men! Whilst blokes bought mainly roses, lilies and chrysanthemums, girls’ favourite purchases were also roses, lilies and then carnations.

Regionally, Wales showed the least imagination in Valentines flower purchasers of all, and Londoners bought the most adventurous flowers.

We spent £8 million on roses last Valentines Day – here’s some ideas on what other flowers you could get for your money:

Amaryllis – trumpet-shaped flowers with velvety petals- sensually stunning!
Orchids – elegant cymbidium, pretty phalaenopsis and tropical Vanda look great when given as a single stem, wrapped exquisitely – you don’t have to spend the earth!
Tropical blooms – ginger flowers, heliconias and anthuriums are saucy, fun and unusual
Hyacinths – gorgeously scented, these pretty flowers will lift any girls’ spirits
Ranunculus – every girl likes peonies, these are like the miniature spring version and come in even more colours!
Lisianthus – like a vintage looking rose, they come in beautiful pastel shades that everyone adores

Totally stuck? Why not try a fabulous plant – rose plants, hoya (these are naturally heart-shaped), anthuriums, gerbera plants, jasmine – are all perfect choices, are easier to transport and last for weeks – a true declaration of long lasting love!
